Not many people will recognise the man ‘getting married’ in this scene, but his voice was familiar to many in the seventies. The man is George Woolley of Heanor.
He played the part of Joby Woodford in the long-running radio serial The Archers.
Although not ‘seen’ on radio, his ‘wedding’ to Ambridge postmistress Martha Lily (played by Molly Harris) was filmed away from the studio for publicity purposes and attracted many onlookers.
Sadly, George died in real life on 7th October 1979, aged 66 years. A number of celebrities of the time, including Arthur Pentelow (Henry Wilks of Emmerdale), came to his funeral. Unfortunately, Wilfred Bramble (Steptoe) was unable to attend because of illness.
