Alfie Charles Burford-Blanche was a guest of honour at Ilkeston fire station after his quick thinking led to the rescue of a man from a burning building.
On Thursday 28 March 2024, the 9-year-old heard a smoke alarm sounding at his elderly neighbour’s property on Primrose Drive in Morley.
Alfie alerted his babysitter to the alarm and the fact his neighbour would be inside the property. Upon going outside to investigate the situation, she noticed smoke within the property and called 999.
Emergency Services attended the scene at around 10.38pm, with firefighters rescuing the man who was asleep upstairs and had not woken to the sound of the smoke alarm.
He was handed into the care of East Midlands Ambulance Service. An investigation into the cause of the fire at the Morley property concluded the most likely cause was accidental due to a fire guard falling onto the carpet. A fire service spokesperson said: “Without a doubt, Alfie’s quick-thinking helped played a major role in saving the life of his neighbour.”
