Does anyone know anything about this lady? The picture has appeared on social media and is captioned: Liz Barrett with her donkey and cart 1910.
The street is almost certainly East Street, Ilkeston. The old Borough Arms pub can be seen at the top of the street, the solicitors premises just below and The Harrow Inn across the road on Bath Street.
But who is the lady with her donkey and cart, which appears to be laden with large lumps of coal? What a heavy load for the poor donkey to pull on the hilly streets. Notice how it was ‘parked’ with the wheels against the kerb to stop it rolling downhill.
Was she delivering to the local cottages? Or just saying hello to the beast of burden?
We would love to hear from anyone who knows of this woman.
She may have relatives still living in the town.
