Have a fantastic little time at Ilkeston’s OTHER fair . . .
A VAST scale model version of Ilkeston Fair has been unveiled – as the town’s real
one gets set to open.
The spectacular mini extravaganza – which is free to visit – features what seems like
an endless array of working rides including waltzers, big wheels and bumper cars.
It takes up a huge room at the back of an Ilkeston store which claims to be the
largest model shop in the East Midlands – specialising in train sets such as Hornby.
The eye-popping miniature Ilkeston Fair on Bath Street is the brainchild of Brett
Grubey, 30. He runs Malcs Models with his dad Malcolm Grubey, 67.
Brett said ahead of the annual Ilkeston Charter Fair kicking off on Wednesday, 18
October: “We had a small display in the window last year but have really pulled out
all the stops this time.
“The charter fair is a fantastic thing for Ilkeston and brings in a lot of business. It’s
been a lot of late nights putting together our miniature tribute to it.”
The rides are 1/24 th scale. In a blast from the past there is even a model of one of the
fair’s most legendary attractions – the Dive Bomber.
Brett, who used to work on the real fair, joked amid the twinkling and flashing of
lights from the display: “I’m dreading the electricity bill!”
Erewash Councillor Alex Breene, who is the borough’s Lead Member for Town
Centres, Regeneration and Planning, said:
“Malcs Models is a terrific shop and just the kind of fascinating independent store
we love on our high streets.
“Thanks to Brett and Malc for going the extra mile to salute this year’s Ilkeston
Charter Fair. The model fair is absolutely something that is worth taking the kids to
see – and it is free.”
Malcs Models normally closes at 4.30pm but is staying open until 6pm during the fair
so visitors can view the display.
