Fun will be the order of the day during the summer holidays at five venues in Erewash.
The ‘It’s About Me’ holiday activity sessions will also include free meals for children eligible for free school dinners.
The fun days kick off at Erewash Museum on Mondays and Tuesdays from 27 July to 18 August. This club, for seven to 12-year-olds, features crafts, activities and a beach from 10am to 2pm.
Children from this age group can also attend two weeks of summer camp at Ilkeston’s Rutland Sports Park. These sessions – featuring sports, crafts and games – will take place from 10am to 2pm on Tuesday 28 July to Friday 31 July, then Tuesday 4 August to Friday 7 August. On different selected dates there will be a giant soft play and bouncy castle, a smoothie bike or a Birds of Prey show.
Children aged seven to 12 will be able to enjoy live bee keeping at one session to be held at Long Eaton School on Thoresby Road. Activities will take place from Tuesday 18 August to Friday 21 August, and then Wilsthorpe School on Derby Road on Tuesday 25 August to Friday 28 August.
Teen Holiday Activity and Food Clubs for Students aged 10 to 16, will be held at Kirk Hallam Community Corner in Windsor Crescent on Wednesdays from 29 July to 26 August and at Cotmanhay Pavilion in Shirebrook Close on Thursdays from 30 July to 27 August. The clubs run from 5pm until 7pm and offer lots to do each week with sports on the outdoor court, youth club activities, food inside the community room and space to chill out and socialise.
The fun days are part of a county-wide initiative called It’s About Me, which gets funding from the Department for Education. Families need to book in advance to enrol children using a code available from school offices. We’re glad that families in our community find these sessions beneficial, and it’s wonderful to know that children have a place to enjoy a free healthy lunch and have fun with activities that support their wellbeing over the break. Trinity Methodist Church’s free weekly lunches are an incredible initiative as well, and we’re delighted to support the project.”
One other school holiday initiative that the council is backing this summer provides free weekly lunches for families.
It is run by Trinity Methodist Church at its church hall on Long Eaton’s Cross Street – where adults and accompanied children can eat in or grab a freebie takeaway picnic at the popular Crossways Coffee Shop on Thursdays between 11am and 1pm.
