FAMILIES will be flocking to one of Erewash’s parks on the last Friday of May – as it stages a FREE half-term treasure hunt amid the glorious spring weather.
The council-run event is being billed as a fun-filled challenge for bored youngsters, who will be given maps so they can follow clues.
The treat has been lined up at Long Eaton’s West Park on 29 May. Participants are being invited to simply turn up at 10am to grab their maps from the reception desk at the leisure centre there – with no requirement to book in advance.
The Family Treasure Hunt lasts until noon. Cllr Josy Hare, who is Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “It is a great way for youngsters to keep active – and we would love to see families joining in from right across our borough.”
Friday’s weather is forecast to be perfect for the event – not quite as hot as the recent record May temperatures but still sunny and warm.

The treasure hunt has been organised as a highlight of Erewash Walking Month – which is a programme of 36 strolls and activities aimed at getting residents out and about during May.
Hundreds have already taken part in the free volunteer-led jaunts – including many who rarely went for walks previously. The final weekend of May features a six-mile “Alpacas Loop” around a farm where the llama-like animals live. It is on Saturday 30 May and starts at The Royal Oak in Ockbrook at 10am. Elsewhere in the borough the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct will be staging a fascinating guided tour of the famed “Iron Giant”. It too starts at 10am on Saturday.
The weekend weather is expected to continue to be fine and dry on the final day of Erewash Walking Month – Sunday 31 May. That is when residents are invited to take part in the spookily-named Coffin Walk – a gentle eight-mile trek around Breaston and Shardlow that starts behind Draycott Fish Bar at 10.30am.
