Derby Museum and Art Gallery proudly hosted the third edition of the TOASTED Ceramic Fair, welcoming an exceptional turnout as visitors queued in large numbers to experience the celebrated event.
The fair brought together 38 talented potters from across the UK, including artists travelling from Scotland, Brighton, Wales and beyond, transforming the heart of Derby into a vibrant hub of contemporary ceramics. With free entry, live pottery demonstrations, engaging talks, and an impressive programme of 9 workshops with 162 spaces, completely sold out weeks in advance, the event attracted enthusiastic crowds eager to explore the breadth of work on display.
Regular exhibitor Jack Durling commented:
“TOASTED attracts visitors from far and wide. I am delighted to have welcomed both new and returning customers. Winning the Scarva People’s Choice Award in my first year at the show has really supported the trajectory of my career. The event is clearly valued by the public and highlights Derby’s rich pottery heritage while celebrating contemporary makers.”
Visitors also participated in a popular tombola, offering the chance to win handcrafted ceramic pieces donated by exhibitors. The initiative raised an impressive £2,000 in support of the museum. One attendee shared:
“I came to look around the show and couldn’t afford to buy something, but I won this lovely bowl from Terry Nason through the tombola. I’m absolutely delighted.”
Workshops provided hands-on experiences for attendees of all ages, with participants creating a wide range of pieces including animals, textured pots, and imaginative sculptures. One participant said:
“I love Markia’s work, and it was a pleasure to create something alongside her. It’s something I’ll treasure—and incredible value at just £4. I can’t wait for next year.”
Event organiser David William Sampson added:
“It’s wonderful to see the Wardwick so full of energy, with visitors enjoying talks, demonstrations, and hands-on experiences with clay. Hearing the bell ring and cheers erupt with each tombola win added to the atmosphere. It was a real joy, and we look forward to returning with the museum again in 2027.”
TOASTED Ceramic Fair continues to establish itself as a key cultural event, celebrating both the heritage and future of ceramics in Derby and beyond and we can not wait for next year’s TOASTED Ceramic Fair already!
