A major regeneration initiative in Ilkeston received high‑profile recognition as High Sheriff of Derbyshire, High Sheriff of Derbyshire for 2025–2026, visited the former Marks & Spencer building on Bath Street to learn more about plans to transform it into a multi‑purpose cultural community hub and makerspace for the town.
The visit began at the former Ilkeston Police Station, now the home of the Erewash Partnership, an organisation supporting small businesses, enterprise and community‑driven projects across the borough. Chief Executive Ian Viles and Board Chair Richard Ledger, Managing Director of local manufacturing company Millitec, introduced Sir Richard to the project’s aims. They highlighted the urgent need for new, sustainable facilities for young people, local creatives and community organisations in light of pressures on spaces in Cotmanhay and the surrounding areas.
Before departing for Bath Street, Sir Richard was presented with a commemorative mug and a model Barton bus to mark the occasion. Guests then boarded a preserved Barton bus to travel to the Bath Street site. Once a familiar sight on Ilkeston’s streets, the vintage bus carried the High Sheriff and attendees to the site, connecting Ilkeston’s heritage with its ambitions for future regeneration.
A Crucial Project for a Town in Need of Cultural Space
Ilkeston has faced significant challenges regarding the availability of cultural and community facilities. The Cotmanhay Community Network Centre required substantial funding simply to remain open, and the closure of youth clubs, creative venues and multi‑use spaces has highlighted the urgent need for new, resilient infrastructure.
The former M&S building and nightclub has long been recognised as a prime location for investment. Its restoration presents an opportunity to provide modern, inclusive facilities for makerspaces, performing arts, youth activities, cultural participation, community learning and local start‑ups.
Restoration Progress and Plans for the Future
Extensive work on the building is already underway. Completed works include exterior wall rendering and structural repairs with the installation of new windows, currently in progress. The next phase of the project includes preparations for the essential roof replacement.Once restored, the multi‑storey cultural space is intended to include a theatre and performance space complete with a performance stage for theatre, dance, spoken word and community events. The upper‑floors will accommodate creative makerspaces complete with facilities for a range of creative and performance uses, inspired by Harlem Studios in Wirksworth and Banks Mill Studios in Derby, along with a dedicated dance studio and flexible space for charities, social enterprises and small businesses.

High Sheriff Shows Support for the Project
Sir Richard FitzHerbert expressed strong support for the vision behind the transformation, calling it a valuable and much‑needed contribution to Ilkeston and the surrounding communities. He took a keen interest in the town’s history, cultural heritage and the challenges faced by residents who have experienced reduced access to creative and social opportunities.
Funding and Community Engagement Needed
While significant progress has been made, further investment is urgently required, as current funding is due to expire at the end of April. The project now seeks new financial support to progress with the next major stage of replacing the roof, which must be completed before the upper floors can be safely fitted out.
The Erewash Partnership, is inviting businesses, funders, sponsors, donors, skilled tradespeople and community partners to support the next phase of development.
Creative groups, arts organisations, youth projects, charities and local enterprises interested in using or renting the space are also encouraged to come forward.
A Naming Competition Planned with Erewash Sound
In the coming months, the community will be encouraged to take part in a public competition with Erewash Sound, inviting residents to help choose the official name of the new cultural centre. Full details of the competition will be announced in the coming months closer to the opening date.
