With World Book Day coming up on 5th March and 2026 marked as the National Year of Reading, learning experts at Ilkeston Life, your community newspaper, are encouraging people to see reading as more than just a hobby.
Studies show that one in six adults in England experience common mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression in any given week. Small daily habits, like reading, can make a real difference.
Dr Richard Anderson from High Speed Training says reading can help us relax, improve sleep and even build empathy.
Relaxation
Just six minutes of silent reading has been shown to slow the heart rate and reduce muscle tension. Sitting down with a book helps you switch off from daily worries and focus on something calming.
Better Sleep
Reading before bed can help your mind wind down. It’s often far better than scrolling on your phone, which can keep your brain alert for longer.
Empathy & Feeling Less Alone
Books allow us to see the world through other people’s experiences. They can also help us feel understood, especially if we see parts of our own life reflected in what we read.
Here are three simple ways to use reading to support your mental health:
• Build it into your daily routine – even 10 minutes makes a difference.
• Read with children – it’s great for their development and gives you quality time together.
• Join a book club – it’s a structured, friendly way to meet others and share ideas.
This World Book Day, why not take a little time for yourself and pick up a book?
