Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, joined the Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander today at the East Midlands Railway training facility in Derby, as the government announced that 18- to 20-year-olds will now be able to apply to be train drivers.
Here is a quote from Mayor Claire Ward for your consideration if covering this story.
“I want the East Midlands to be front and centre of the UK’s rail future. This announcement is another example of how I am working with the Government to create jobs, drive growth, and back our young people.
“The East Midlands is at the heart of the country and Derby is at the heart of the rail industry, standing as Europe’s largest rail cluster. Our region is home to 600 rail-related companies and employing 45,000 people, with Derby alone employing 11,000 skilled rail employees.
“We are a young population, and I am committed to getting more people into good, much needed jobs – and with this announcement, our region is best placed to open doors for young people to pursue a career in the rail industry”
