Football is not just about football. It’s about community and supporting each other. This was demonstrated at Ilkeston Town FC recently.
A young lad, Hugh, is battling Perth’s disease, a condition that affects the normal growth of the hip bone. His dad took him to watch Ilkeston, and what a boost it gave them.
Spending time with Declan Eratt-Thompson – regarded by many as Ilkeston’s star player – renewed hope of a good outcome from Hugh’s hospital treatment, despite recent not so good news.
His dad said: “Going to watch Declan today who also had Perth’s Disease as a child, our football-mad boy getting to watch someone who’s been through the same thing and thriving now through football meant everything to him.
“Thank you, Declan, for giving our boy the best day, and for the signed shirt and boot. You are officially his new favourite player ever, and he wants to watch you every week. What a great man you are.”
Football reporter Matchman says: “Dec had to use a wheelchair when he was young, so seeing him now is inspiring. He is one of Ilkeston’s best players. He never stops running. It’s amazing that he’s done so well. Most supporters will say he’s our best player.”
