The area around Bennerley Viaduct is a haven for birds

Among summer visitors are swifts, but sadly, they are in decline. Swift action is required! Friends of Bennerley Viaduct are helping by installing specially designed nesting boxes on one of the brick abutments well above ground level.

With the help of Safe Access Scaffolding of Ilkeston, volunteers fixed the boxes to the brickwork at the right height.

Site ranger Ian Lambert says: “With luck we’ll attract some birds this summer. Some of the other conservation work we’ve done is increasing the number of insects, the main part of the swift’s diet.”
