Salute in the air for Donald

Ilkeston’s oldest resident and the fourth-oldest surviving WW2 veteran Donald Rose is being honoured with a Spitfire flyover on Bank Holiday Monday 6th May.
Two of the famous warplanes will fly above the Canal Vue care home where he lives.
The RAF were only too willing to agree to the flight after staff at Canal Vue on Awsworth Road contacted them.
They are expecting many townspeople to join them for their special event which will include food and drinks and songs by Lily Lovejoy, a ‘vintage vocalist’ specialising in wartime songs.
The party starts at 1pm – with the flypast scheduled to take place at 1.45.
Donald was born in 1914 and saw military action in many parts of the world. He has been decorated many times, including receiving France’s highest award – the Legion D’Honneur.
Erewash’s Mayor Cllr Frank Phillips said: “The borough and the entire nation owe an immense debt of gratitude to Donald and all those like him.”
Deputy Mayor Cllr Kate Fennelly said: “Having served in the RAF, I have the utmost respect for our courageous old soldiers, especially world war veterans like Donald. There are fewer and fewer left who we can talk to face-to-face about their experiences.”
Naomi Allsop of the care home said Donald is a much loved resident and everyone is excited about giving him this treat.
