Council committee meeting adjourned

About a hundred members of the public turned up for a meeting at Ilkeston Town Hall last night, but it ended in disorder and was abandoned after 15 minutes.
The protesters were objecting to plans to sell land at West End Drive. They feared that the old Peewit golf course would become a site for 70 houses.
The meeting had to be adjourned with little debate and will resume next Wednesday 21st February, 7pm at Long Eaton Town Hall.
Maggie Throup, MP for Erewash, was at the meeting, which she described as ‘chaos’.
Speaking afterwards she said: “The right of the public to view the proceedings of their elected representatives is a fundamental feature of our democracy, and so I was ashamed of the farcical scenes that we all witnessed at the Town Hall last night.”
Ms Throup wants the meeting to be reconvened in Ilkeston again, not Long Eaton, because “this is a critical decision about the long-term future of Ilkeston’s largest public open space, and so the residents expect it to be made here in Ilkeston.”
Erewash Labour Council have been approached for a response.
