This afternoon, chip shop owner Dennis Jackson presented a cheque to Ilkeston Hospital. It was the amount of his last day of trading before retirement. Two nurses from the hospital were there to receive the cheque and were joined by staff, friends and well wishers.
The amount of the cheque was £2,319.50p, which included the wages of his staff who had agreed to work for nothing on the final day (Saturday 8th April).
Customers had queued down the street to get their last taste of Dennis’s famous fish, chips, pies, chicken, etc. Ilkeston’s favourite fryer said some of them had handed extra money over the counter for the hospital fund.
Pictures by John Shelton show Dennis, wife Margaret, chippie and hospital staff and friends inside and outside the shop on Market Street.
