Dedication of the grave of Pvt H.H. Tingle

His Majesty the King’s Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Military personnel, veterans and surviving family will join pupils of Granby Junior School at a dedication and remembrance tribute to a First World War Soldier and former Granby teacher who lay in an unmarked grave for over 100 years.
Herbert Henry Tingle moved from Kettering to become assistant master of Granby School in Ilkeston and served with the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and returned from the war, but died in 1920 as a result of his injuries.
Children at Granby became aware of his story and his unmarked grave and their research project resulted in his recognition by the Commonwealth War Graves with a Commonwealth Headstone so his grave is properly recognised.
James Dawson – Vice Chair of Governors at Granby School said:
“It’s great that this event is finally taking place after having to be postponed due to Covid and the sad death of Her Majesty The Queen. The pupils have enjoyed researching Herbert’s story, tracing his surviving family, and finally giving his final resting place proper recognition. The school is pleased that we can be joined by HM Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, The Mayors of Erewash & Kettering, Herbert’s surviving relatives, the Mercian regiment, and both Ilkeston and Kettering Royal British Legion Branches to mark the occasion.”
The event will take place at Ilkeston’s Park Cemetery on Tuesday 21st March 2023 at 10:30am for a 10:45 start.
Present will be HM Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Mrs Elizabeth Fothergill CBE, The Mayor of Erewash Councillor John Sewell, The Mayor of Kettering Cllr Keli Watts, and representatives of The Mercian Regiment, The Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and Ilkeston and Kettering Branches of the Royal British Legion.
Pvt Herbert Tingle was buried in Park Cemetery in 1920 and his grave has been unmarked for over a century.
