Bid to stop cuts to Museum’s opening hours

Erewash Borough Council’s proposals to save money by reducing opening hours at Erewash Museum have been met with opposition.
Fans of the award-winning museum in Ilkeston town centre say the cuts would have a detrimental effect on the amenity.
A petition – Save Erewash Museum Ilkeston from council budget cuts – has been set up on the change.org website.
Campaigner Carl Shaw says signatures have already reached four figures. He is convinced that the museum would not recover if the cuts went through, suggesting that there would be no capacity to run events like The Beach, no more safe spaces and meet-ups for the community and generally there would be a decline in the museum’s status as a leading visitor attraction.
As well as reducing opening hours, EBC wants to make two staff redundant.
Mr Shaw said: “There was no public consultation, the minutes of the meetings had no details, everyone was blindsided. The Friends of the Museum and the public were not consulted.”
Details of the petition can be found at: www.change.org/saveerewashmuseum.
