Death of market trader

A market trader described by his niece as ‘one of Ilkeston’s characters’ has died.
Patrick Joseph Wright passed away on 12th May, aged 82 years.
He was born on St Patrick’s day, the 17th March 1940 at a house on Nottingham Road, Ilkeston.
His niece Debbie Blaydon told us: “At fourteen years old, a Saturday job on Ilkeston Market sealed his fate. He loved the camaraderie and was at his happiest amongst the stalls with the customers and his peers.”
“The market filled the whole of the square then and was a magnet for shoppers from miles around. It is much smaller now but our Pat was still a familiar face to many visitors.
“Uncle Pat with his big watches, gold chains and a cheeky grin and humour will be sadly missed by all who knew him, especially his sister Pauline, Ray and family.”
