Ilkeston care home residents celebrate the Jubilee with a garden party and share their memories of The Coronation
Residents at Four Seasons The Cedars and Larches Care Home in Ilkeston celebrated the Platinum Jubilee with a garden party.
Residents made decorations for the home in their craft activities in the weeks leading up to the event. Friends and families of the residents were also invited and helped make handmade cards which were sent to The Queen to congratulate her.
The home’s chefs prepared a special Jubilee tea which included Coronation chicken, finger sandwiches, cream meringues and scones which residents and guests enjoyed while being entertained by John West who performed songs made popular by favourites such as Elvis Presley and Tom Jones.
Residents shared their memories from 1952 when The Queen succeeded to the throne on the death of her father, King George VI and from watching the Coronation on the TV the following year. Resident, Grace, aged 86, said: “I remember my mother telling me that The King had died, I was only 16 years old and all the grown-ups were very sad.”
Resident, June, aged 91, said: “We didn’t have a television but our neighbours invited us round to watch the Coronation and I remember thinking that The Queen must have been very nervous with all those millions of people watching her. We had ice cream for pudding that day as a special treat.”
The home’s manager, Tataa Thamaga, said: “Our residents have been so excited during the build up to the big day and really enjoyed helping with the preparations. We’ve had such a wonderful time celebrating together and sharing our memories of The Queen over the years.”
