Musical event this weekend at the Museum

Welcome Back

A celebration of music and the arts will be the focus of a two-day festival-style event for all the family at Erewash Museum this weekend.

The Soul and Flair ‘Local Music Live’ event on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 March will turn the spotlight on local talent, with the line-up including performances by local bands, choirs and theatre groups.

The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Donna Briggs, will officially salute the music extravaganza on Saturday 19 March at 10.30am.

The free event is being staged thanks to a grant from the government’s Welcome Back Fund, a national initiative funded through the European Regional Development Fund aimed at projects to support the safe return to high streets after the pandemic challenges.

Friday’s programme will run from 10.30am-5.30pm with fun artist led workshops aimed at pre-school age children during the morning followed by afternoon activities for school age youngsters. There will also be interactive musical performances and small break out shows with folk music and cultural music for adults.

Saturday is the main event running from 10.30am-7.30pm with bands, choirs, musical theatre groups and acts from all around the local area. Local food charity Everyone Eats is attending and offering free lunch bags, filled with food sourced from shops in Ilkeston.

There will also be a community market where local shops, organisations and charities will sell products and raise awareness about what they do.

Coronavirus restrictions meant the museum – which is just off Ilkeston Market Place – was closed for long periods of time and Local Music Live is a way of continuing the work of welcoming back visitors to its activities and to the town centre.

Councillor Carol Hart, Leader of Erewash Borough Council, says:

“We hope lots of people in Erewash will head to the museum this weekend to enjoy what I’m sure will be spectacular performances. These events will showcase some excellent local talent and will act as a reminder that our award winning museum hosts some of the best events in the borough.”

Erewash Museum is located in Ilkeston town centre, a short walk from the Market Place. Opening hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am-4pm, and Monday to Saturday during school holidays. Admission is free.
