The 21st Ilkeston (Kirk Hallam) cub pack went to camp at the Oaks site, Charnwood, Leicestershire in mid September, assisted by the SAS catering team.
It was their first camp since March 2020.
Akela Diane Harris said it was great to be camping again. “The program was basic skills – tent pitching and care of the tents, shelter building, camp gadget making, countryside code and first aid; also mapping, compass work, orienteering and tracking. Not forgetting fire lighting and camp fire plus by popular demand rifle shooting and grass sledging.
“The Cubs were really excited to be at camp – for lots of them this was their first camp and for some their first night away from their parents. Lots of badges were earnt, mainly the Adventure challenge and Outdoor challenge, nights away and others. Thanks to the BIG KH lottery fund of £296 we were able to reduce the fees.”
Diane stressed the need for more volunteers in Scouting:
Scouting cannot happen in Ilkeston without the dedication of all its leaders and helpers. Volunteering with Scouting can be as flexible as you need. We are currently looking for a new team leader as well as other district roles. As life returns to normal, we are having lots of new enquiries for young people to enjoy the benefits of Scouting. So, if you are interested in lending a hand, please do get in touch via email: ilkestonscouting@gmail.com. Or if you want to pick up the phone: Diane 0115 932 9979. I am happy to answer any questions.
