Bess of Hardwick talk
A woman of many parts
A humorous talk by Maureen Taylor, a well-known expert on Bess of Hardwick and Elizabethan customs and manners. Maureen will appear dressed as Sir Walter Raleigh’s wife (who was also called Bess) and talk about her time as Bess of Hardwick’s friend and confidante.
.A woman of indomitable character developed through adversity, Bess of Hardwick is the stuff of legends, charismatic, forceful, flamboyant and fascinating. She was a woman ahead of her time who set out to build a dynasty and succeeded. Her descendants flourished on the foundations laid by Bess and now include the Dukes of Devonshire, Portland, Kingston and Newcastle, and the Earls of Shrewsbury, Pembroke, Arundel and Kent.
The talk will take place on Friday 29th October in St Catherine’s Church, Cossall, starting at 7.30 pm, please be seated by 7.00 pm.
Tickets: (pay on the door only) adults £5.00, under 12’s £3.00; includes coffee, tea and biscuits during the interval.
