Bloomin’ fabulous!
Erewash is a champion borough again after its award winning towns Ilkeston and Long Eaton both struck gold in the prestigious East Midlands in Bloom competition.
News that the towns have retained the medal-winning top spots is a special cause for celebration for Erewash Borough Council’s parks teams, who produced stunning floral displays despite the challenging times and worked throughout to ensure the flower power lifted the spirits of everyone.
The clean sweep was announced at the East Midlands in Bloom presentation ceremony on Wednesday (22 September) when Ilkeston and Long Eaton secured Gold Medals in the Large Town category.
Councillor Carol Hart, Leader of Erewash Borough Council, said:
“Our winning record in this prestigious competition is a credit to our teams, but this year’s double gold is a remarkable achievement when we consider everything that has happened over the last year and a half. My congratulations and thanks go to all our staff and special praise as well for the community volunteers who work so hard.
“The colourful summer planting is always inspirational and welcomed by all – but it has been important beyond what we could have ever imagined for providing a much-needed feel good factor. Our staff, our volunteers and our communities should be extremely proud. Well done to all.”
The awards also saw Special Judges’ honours presented to Long Eaton’s Wilsthorpe Road Allotment Holders for their well maintained and wildlife-friendly site and the Friends of Ilkeston’s Victoria Park for their dedication to making the park a peaceful and enjoyable place to visit
Further honours for Erewash saw a Horticultural Excellence within Parks award for Victoria Park, Ilkeston and a Best New Permanent Landscape win for the reworking of the historic landscaping around Long Eaton Town Hall.
