FRIENDSHIP BECKONS AS STUDENTS TAKE PART IN PEN PAL SCHEME

Canal Vue Care Home has partnered with the Prince’s Trust Derbyshire, to extend its hand of friendship to students on the Prince’s Trust Certificate in Employment, Teamwork and Community Skills course.

Under the guidance of the Prince’s Trust the ten-week personal and social development programme will focus on a pen pal scheme relationship with the people who live and are cared for at the care home.

Students will write a series of letters, which allow them to develop skills such as improving reading and writing, understanding someone else’s perspective, showing concern and empathy and learning how to communicate in a different form.

The programme has already kicked off with introductions focusing on who the residents are in a care home. They start by introducing themselves, what they look like how they feel and what they are doing at that moment, discussing likes and dislikes.

At the end of week 10 we’re sure many relationships will have been formed. At this stage it is hoped they will stay in touch and continue the friendship that has developed

Naomi Allsop, Activities Coordinator at Canal Vue Care Home comments on her initiative to start a mutually beneficial partnership with The Princes Trust Derbyshire: “We’ve experienced lack of visitors due to the pandemic and welcome company. Who doesn’t like to receive a hand- written letter? – such a rare thing these days.”
