Coronavirus Statement
Maggie Throup MP, Member of Parliament for Erewash has issued the following urgent plea to local residents:
With infection rates worryingly continuing to rise across Erewash, it has never been more important for us all to stay at home in order to save lives and protect our NHS from the very real threat of being overwhelmed for the first time in its history.
The new highly transmissible variant of the virus has had a serious impact on both the number of people testing positive and consequently the number of people being admitted to hospital, including those in lower age groups.
To be frank, this is a matter of life and death, and whilst the majority of our community have made an heroic effort to comply with the rules throughout the pandemic, I share the disappointment of local residents in relation to the instances of rule breaking we have seen.
These selfish actions inevitably put us all at risk and tragically will cost more people their lives.
For the duration of the National Lockdown, you must not leave, or be outside of your home except for a limited number of reasons, including to:
shop for basic necessities, for you or a vulnerable person
go to work, or provide voluntary or charitable services, if you cannot reasonably do so from home
exercise with your household (or support bubble) or one other person, this should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area.
meet your support bubble or childcare bubble where necessary, but only if you are legally permitted to form one
seek medical assistance or avoid injury, illness or risk of harm (including domestic abuse)
attend education or childcare – for those eligible
If you do leave home for a permitted reason, you should always stay local – unless it is necessary to go further, for example to go to work. Stay local means stay in the village or town where you live.
The law has been updated to reflect these rules and are accordingly enforceable by our Police, who have my full support.
When leaving your home for a permitted reason, then please remember the basics of washing hands, covering your face and observe social distancing.
Vaccines offer us real hope for the future and with over 5 million doses already delivered nationwide, there is now light at the end of this very dark tunnel and a clear route back to freedom.
For now though, it is our collective duty to follow the rules, stay at home and importantly accept your appointment to be vaccinated when requested to do so by your local GP.
