Ilkeston Swimming Club success in UK largest open water event.
Swim Serpentine sponsored by Children with Cancer is the largest open water mass participation event in the UK which took place on Saturday 21st September in Hyde Park, London attracted over 6,000 swimmers, was watched by thousands of spectators in the late summer sun. The Serpentine venue made famous by the London 2012 Olympic swimming and triathlon is now in its fourth year, offers swimmers of all capabilities and ages an opportunity to take part in a variety of distances ranging from ½ mile, 1 mile, 2 mile distance and ‘Super Six’.
Jack Stadler age 16 and a member of Ilkeston Swimming Club, participated in the 2019 annual open water swim, managed to complete the 2 mile distance finishing 9th in his age category (15-17) and was ranked 71 out of all the 6,000 swimmers in only his second open water event. This is a great achievement for the keen athlete who is looking forward to new challenges and is considering to enter the ‘Super Six’ challenge next year, a gruelling six mile distance.
Richard Tomlinson, Head coach at Ilkeston commented, “This is a great achievement for one of our own local swimmers in his second open water competitive event. It’s been a great year for the club with swimmers competing in county, regional and national events and we’re really looking forward to a great season ahead”.
Open water swimming has seen a huge uptake of swimmers in recent years and Ilkeston Swimming Club is a growing club that welcomes swimmers of all ages and abilities to come along and find out more.
