Press Release For Ilkeston Carnival Committee Meeting

Residents of Ilkeston have been invited to a community meeting on Wednesday 31st July at 6pm Ilkeston Church of the Nazarene on Corporation Road, to discuss the future of Ilkeston Carnival, after the Ilkeston Lions Club announced their decision to cease organisational responsibility of the event.

Earlier this year the Ilkeston Lions, who have been organising the carnival for over 30 years, announced that due to reduced membership and operational difficulties the scheduled 2019 carnival would be their last, whilst many had hoped that the weather would hold out, severe rain plagued the weekend of the carnival and it was ultimately cancelled.

When news first broke that the carnival would not be returning local residents took to social media to vent their frustrations and upset at losing the traditional summer event.

Inspired by community spirit and appreciation for a traditional carnival, a group of local volunteers, including some former members of the Ilkeston Lions have formed a new committee and have invited local residents and businesses to a public meeting on Wednesday to discuss their plans for the future.

At the meeting, members of the committee will begin by introducing themselves to the public, and then will outline the potential plans for the 2020 carnival. During the meeting there will be an opportunity for people to ask questions to the committee and put forward any ideas that they may have. Closing the meeting will be the chair of the new committee who will call upon people to sign up as volunteers for the running of the carnival.

A spokesperson for the group said “We are looking forward to welcoming people to our public meeting to discuss the future of our towns carnival. We have been meeting for a few months now and we are ready to present our proposed ideas to the public, hear feedback, and of course listen to what the people of Ilkeston have to say”

Light refreshments will be provided, as well as donation buckets to go towards the fund for the Ilkeston 2020 carnival. Guests are invited to attend from 6pm.
