Be aware that turning to social media to find a ‘white van man’ for a ‘tip run’ could land you in hot water.
So-called ‘waste cowboys’ never actually take your waste to a licensed site. Instead it is often fly-tipped, usually on public land such as lay-bys and woodland areas.
If fly-tipped waste is traced to you, you could be prosecuted and face an unlimited fine.
Erewash Borough Council has issued a number of formal cautions to people giving their waste to unlicensed carriers from social media sites like Facebook.
We have also recovered clean-up costs from them, meaning not only have they paid to have their waste
taken away but also to have the waste cleared. One person received a hefty fine after the case was heard in court last week.
A genuine waste carrier will have an Environment Agency waste carriers licence and it is your duty to check that anyone taking items away from your property has that licence.
Please help keep our borough clean – always check for a waste carriers licence on the Environment Agency website and do not hire unregistered contractors from social media.
