“A fantastic night knowing you’re helping other people”

As the Treetops Starlight Strut fast approaches, Jacqui Buxton from Bramcote, shares her reasons for taking part in the annual charity night walk.
This will be the fifth time that Jacqui, 68yrs, a retired primary school teacher, has taken part in the sponsored walk that this year takes place on Friday 17 May.
Treetops Hospice Care supports adults with life limiting conditions living in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, including Hospice at Home nurses who provide care in patient’s own homes during the day and overnight. Last year, Hospice at Home nurses provided over 41,800 hours of care across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Jacqui explained more about her personal reasons for taking part:
“Both my parents had support from the hospice. My dad had Hospice at Home care during the day – nurses to sit with him while my mum came to the hospice to enjoy the art activities.
“Dad thought about mum and wanted to give her a break as he was that kind of person. I’ve visited several times since he died – especially for events – it’s changed enormously over the years.
“I also had breast cancer in 2002-3 and having recovered well, I like to contribute in bringing awareness to good causes like Treetops whenever I can. I enjoy keeping fit and my husband, Graham, has also helped each time as a Volunteer Marshal and roped several of his friends into doing so.”
Along with close friend Dilys Laing, Jacqui is planning to complete the 10k route around Derby city centre and looking forward to the walk:
“It’s just fantastic on the night – the atmosphere alone is worth going for! It’s very party-like and the fancy dress costumes are wonderful.
“It’s all ages and everyone is so supportive of each other. It’s a really positive achievement when it’s over and joyful to know that you’re helping other people – the feel-good factor is fantastic.

“I’ve been riding bikes for over 20 years so our team name is ‘Girls on Bikes’. We’re all wives of members of a local branch of the Blue Knights motorcycle club and I have a couple of bikes – a Harley 1200 and a BMW 700 – which I still ride.”
The Starlight Strut takes place on Friday 17 May at 9pm – a 5km or 10km walk around Derby city centre starting at intu Derby. Registration is £10 and men, women and children are welcomed to take part. Those interested in taking part can register online at www.starlightstrut.com.
