Scheme worth its weight in waste

The first week of the community household waste collection scheme in Erewash has been hailed a success – with residents dropping off items totalling nearly two and a half tonnes in weight.

The scheme is a 16-week pilot which allows residents to take small bulky waste items to drop off points across the borough. The council is using refuse collection vehicles at two sites in different locations across the borough each Saturday morning to provide residents with a local, convenient disposal option for their small bulky waste items.

In total more than two tonnes of bulky waste and close to half a tonne of waste electrical items were collected on Saturday December 8 at sites in Sandiacre and Risley.

The pilot scheme will run until 23 March with the next collections taking place on Saturday December 15 at Windsor Crescent car park in Kirk Hallam and Abbotsford Community Centre car park in Ilkeston, from 8am until 11.30am.

Councillor Garry Hickton, Lead Member for Environment at Erewash Borough Council, says:

“The pilot scheme has been a success so far and people who came to the community waste collection points on Saturday said they thought it was a good idea. There are still 15 collections to go between now and March so we would encourage residents to make use of them for any small bulky waste items that they want to dispose of. This includes items such as small electrical appliances like kettles, toasters and hairdryers.”
