Erewash joins the nation to remember
Poignant events to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War will be held in Ilkeston and Long Eaton town centres during the evening of Remembrance Sunday.
Residents can join the historic Battle’s Over and Ringing in of the Peace events on Sunday 11 November to honour the day peace was declared 100 years ago.
Erewash Borough Council has organised the events as part of centenary commemorations taking place throughout the United Kingdom to give local residents the chance to pay their respects and remember all those who lost their lives.
In Ilkeston Market Place, Johnny Victory will entertain from 6.15pm with wartime songs and refreshments will be on offer from local church members.
In Long Eaton Market Place, also from 6.15pm, the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band will be playing nostalgic wartime music plus songs from a guest singer.
The remembrance will then continue in both towns:
• 7pm – beacons will be lit to join towns and venues across the country as part of the nation’s tribute to 100 years of remembrance.
• 7.05pm – residents will hear the bells of St Mary’s Church, Ilkeston and St Laurence’s Parish Church, Long Eaton, ringing out – joining churches across the country and around the world to ‘ring in the peace’ and commemorate the day the guns fell silent.
Councillor Chris Corbett, the Mayor of Erewash, says
“This will be a fitting and moving tribute – an occasion that I am sure will see large crowds in both our town centres to remember this historic day. We are honoured to be able to organise these events to ensure the residents of Erewash can join the nationwide Battle’s Over commemoration.”
Tea lights will be available for a donation, with proceeds going to the Royal British Legion, for those who want to remember the fallen and for the moment the guns fell silent.
