Draycott’s UK victory
Draycott has become the first in Erewash to win an outstanding Gold Medal in the national finals of Britain in Bloom.
The results were announced on Friday (19th) in Belfast, where jubilant members of the Draycott in Bloom group were on hand to receive the Gold Award in the Large Village category.
Award winning Draycott was asked to take part in Britain in Bloom 2018 after impressing judges in the regional East Midlands in Bloom competition – and did Erewash proud on the national stage.
Erewash Borough Council has supported Draycott residents in their drive to make the village a Bloom success and its street cleaning team worked with volunteers to ensure it looked its best when judges visited.
Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, says:
“What an incredible achievement by Draycott, leading the way to help ensure Erewash is very firmly on the map when it comes to its displays, its pride and community spirit. A Gold Medal in the UK finals is outstanding and we applaud all those who made it happen. Well done, you should be very proud of yourselves.”
Kaye Thurgood, chair of Draycott in Bloom, says the whole village is delighted:
“On behalf of Draycott in Bloom and Draycott Village Fund, we are absolutely delighted with both our East Midlands in Bloom and Britain in Bloom Gold awards.
“The hard work, commitment, strength and pride of all the In Bloom volunteers is truly remarkable. We are so incredibly proud of the community we live in.”
The Draycott in Bloom group had already secured a Gold Award in the regional East Midlands in Bloom last month. Among the projects praised was work by The Draycott History Group, which researched and created a trail of 144 Commemorative First World War plaques on homes throughout the village – each giving details of residents who fought in the Great War and who returned or made the ultimate sacrifice.
