Students at Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy raised £500 for the medical assessment unit at the Royal Derby Hospital.
The whole school was asked to wear blue for the day to recognise the 70th anniversary of the NHS and make a donation.
The money will go towards the 51-bed emergency medical admissions unit at Derby, which takes referrals from GPS and Accident and Emergency.
The unit is currently aiming to raise £9,300 to provide drip stands at every bed and has raised more than £2,000 in the last six weeks.
Amy Frost, senior sister on the unit, said that everyone was extremely grateful for the donation from OIEA.
She said: “If you are acutely unwell with a medical problem then you will be admitted to our unit first for initial assessment, treatment and a plan of care will be started. You would then be either discharged home if appropriate or admitted to a speciality ward area or higher-level care area most appropriate for your needs.
“Patients that come to us can suffer with a wide variety of complaints including pneumonia, sepsis, heart attacks, strokes, breathing difficulty, mental health issues, drug and alcohol abuse and much more.
“Patient needs are often complex, and on arrival patient can often be critically unwell. We are an incredibly busy service on average seeing between 80 to 100 admissions a day.
“As a medical team, we are a passionate hardworking service providing care 24 hours a day 365 days a year. We strive every day to go above and beyond for our unit and our patients, as they are the heart of everything we do.
“We are constantly fundraising to gain additional equipment and facilities for our unit to help us provide care to be proud of. I would like to thank everyone at OIEA from the bottom of our hearts for choosing us to donate funds raised from their ‘Wear it Blue Day’.”
Student Chad Fowkes took part in the Wear it Blue Day.
He said: “I think it’s really important to raise money for this unit as it’s the first place people will go to if they are very sick. It’s good to be raising money and helping to make a difference.”
