Claire Newton:

I am contacting you about an exciting event coming up this September.

A year since its opening in July 2017, residents and visitors to the town of Ilkeston will be able to enjoy the magic of steam travel this autumn from Ilkeston station. The Steam Dreams Rail Co. have organised the first ever special charter service to stop in Ilkeston this September as part of a wonderful day trip to the breath-taking Settle and Carlisle Railway.

On Tuesday 11 September, the train, which will at this stage of the journey be hauled by a vintage diesel locomotive, will pull into Ilkeston station at approximately 0825 to pick up passengers. They can sit back and relax as the train chugs up to Yorkshire, where the steam engine for the day, 35018 British India Line, will join the front of the train in time for the journey along the most scenic route in England.

This most magnificent of steam engines carves its way through the Cumbrian Mountains and across the famous Ribblehead Viaduct to the Cathedral City of Carlisle. Once there passengers can visit the ancient Castle founded in 1092 as well as the beautiful Cathedral with its famous 14th Century stained glass window before making their return journey to Ilkeston, arriving at approximately 2150.

David Buck, Chairman of Steam Dreams commented: “It is always exciting to bring steam travel to a new audience. The interest and enthusiasm from passengers to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a steam train as it thunders through the countryside at speeds of up to 75mph is wonderful.” He added: “To be able to join a train from your local station makes it even more pleasurable. This combined with the fabulous on board service offered by our team of friendly and efficient staff ensures a fabulous day for all’.

Tickets for this magical day are available in four classes ranging from £119 per person in Premium Standard through to the top class of Pullman Style Dining at £279 per person. Passengers travelling in Pullman Style will enjoy a two course champagne brunch on the outward journey and a three course dinner on the return, whilst those opting for Premium Standard will be seated at tables of four in open carriages and served with complimentary tea and coffee at their seats.
