Award for Museum
Erewash Museum has won the ‘Engaging Children and Young People’ category at this year’s East Midlands Heritage Awards for its work with children and young people on the Young Creative Curators programme.
The honour was handed out during a ceremony at Trent University on Thursday (9 November), when museum staff and volunteers were presented with their award.
The Young Creative Curators programme offers work placements to local secondary school pupils and university students. It also offers volunteering opportunities to all young people, including those with autism spectrum disorder and learning difficulties.
The museum was also highly commended in the ‘Volunteer Empowerment’ category for its work with volunteers and the volunteer-run tea room. The impact of volunteering allows the museum to involve more of the community in its activity programme.
Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, says:
“We’re very proud that Erewash Museum’s excellence has been recognised for everything it offers, from exhibitions and events through to the tremendous work it does with schools across the borough. These latest awards are another tribute to the hard work of our museum team and the wonderful volunteers who support them.”
Erewash Museum is in Ilkeston town centre, a short walk from the Market Place. Opening hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am-4pm, and Monday to Saturday during school holidays.
