More than 300 primary school pupils celebrated National Fitness Day at an event organised by Erewash School Sport Partnership.
Schools involved included St Thomas, Charlotte Infant, Chaucer Junior, Stanley Common, Granby, Hallam Fields, Ladywood, Mapperley and Kensington.
They came together at Rutland Sports Park in Ilkeston to take part in series of fun and challenging activities.
These included completing a set of fitness tests and then seeing if they could improve the second time around, circuits, trying yoga, completing a questionnaire about sport and PE in their lives, talking about why we should be keeping fit and healthy and taking part in finding out how they can have fun with their friends at playtime by taking part in active games.
Rhian Lilley, Erewash School Sport Partnership development manager, said she feedback from the event had been fantastic.
She said: “The whole event was so well received and the Year 7 students from Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy were incredible.
“The aim of the day was to encourage the children to keep moving and to realise how important it is to do that at school and at home.
“We put on some activities, like yoga, that they probably won’t have tried before and they loved it.
“It was great to see so many smiling faces, enjoying sport, having fun and learning about keeping healthy and being active, which is so important as they grow up.”
Jenny Robinson, Year 6 teacher and PE co-ordinator at Granby Junior School in Ilkeston, said her pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day.
She said: “They had a fantastic time. They found some of the yoga poses quite challenging but they loved trying something new.”
National Fitness Day is an annual celebration of physical activity that aims to get the nation moving more. Thousands of clubs, parks, leisure centres and gyms throw open their doors to the public for free activity sessions, while schools and workplaces also got in on the action.
