Over Christmas, Treetops Hospice Care dealt with break-ins at two of their charity shops based in Chaddesden and Oakwood.
Thieves broke into both shops overnight and caused extensive damage turning over the shops stealing new and donated items, even ripping open Christmas cards that were from volunteers to each other.
Treetops Hospice Care provides nursing care and emotional support for adults, their families and carers across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The hospice has sixteen charity shops across the region as well as a Bridal Boutique and furniture warehouse.
Sara McLuckie, Treetops retail manager, explained how well staff and volunteers coped with the chaos:
“We’re incredibly proud of our shop teams who worked brilliantly on the clean-up operation after the break-ins and both shops were quickly re-opened for customers.
“Broken glass contamination meant we had to dispose of many items that weren’t taken but thanks to generous donations from customers, we are now fully stocked at both shops once again.
“We’re now dealing with permanent repairs following the emergency measures taken at the time.”
The police are currently investigating.
Treetops services are available free of charge and include Support and Information, a Day Care unit based in Risley, Hospice at Home nurses and Therapeutic Services including counselling and complementary therapy.
