Inspiring schoolchildren to live healthy lives was the focus of a conference held by Erewash School Sport Partnership.
Thirty youngsters from five primary schools attended the event, which took place at Wilsthorpe Community School, Long Eaton, along with school staff and ESSP apprentices.
The focus of the event was the Change4Life public health programme, which is run by the Department of Health and uses the slogan “eat well, move more, live longer.”
Children and staff involved came from Dovedale Primary, Grange Primary and Brooklands Primary, all in Long Eaton, Ashbrook Junior, in Borrowash, and Ladywood Primary, in Kirk Hallam.
They were shown activities using sports equipment that they could run in their own schools and were also given a talk about how to be a good leader and healthy eating.
Their teachers and the ESSP apprentices took part in a workshop designed to help them promote healthy living in their schools.
Rhian Lilley, ESSP development manager, said she hoped that everyone had left the event feeling inspired.
She said: “We showed the children some great activities that they can take back into their own schools and perhaps take part in during lunchtimes and playtimes.
“These children will be the leaders in their schools and hopefully they’ve now got plenty of ideas as to how they can inspire their friends to be more active. There were lots of smiling faces which was great to see.
“The message behind the Change4Life campaign is to encourage children to be more physically active and look at healthy eating too.
“With the school staff and our apprentices we also looked at ways of engaging children in sport and tailoring sessions to suit specific needs.”
Kelly Holbrook-Rodgers, senior midday supervisor from Ashbrook Junior School, said the event was a great success.
She said: “We run lots of after-school and lunchtime clubs including fencing which is something a bit different but today has given us some more great ideas.”
