Children from primary schools across the borough have been taking part in a series of Mini Games sessions run by Erewash School Sport Partnership.

Pupils from Stanley St Andrew’s Primary, Dallimore Primary (pictured), Field House Junior, St Thomas Catholic Primary and Mapperley Primary were given the opportunity to try Boccia, sprints and relays at Rutland Sports Park with help from sports leaders at Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy.

At Wilsthorpe School, Shardlow Primary and Parklands Infant had a go at howler javelin, standing long jump, hurdles and parachute games. Sports leaders from Wilsthorpe School, in Long Eaton, helped to run the event.

Ashbrook Junior School, Harrington Junior, Sawley Junior, Brooklands Primary and Dovedale Primary all took part in a Mini Games event at The Long Eaton School.

Liz Power, class teacher at Shardlow Primary School, said her pupils loved taking part in the Mini Games.

She said: “We have brought 27 pupils from Year One and Two. Obviously there’s more space here and the facilities are lovely so it’s good for them to see that. They’ve loved taking part in all of the activities, particularly the javelin and relays. The Mini Games are great because they give the pupils the chance to shine.”

Faith Phillips, 14, is a sports leader from Wilsthorpe School.

She said: “It’s great to be able to help other children do what they want to do, they really enjoy it. It’s great fun and the children are really enthusiastic. Being a sports leader and helping to run the Min Games is rewarding for both us and the children.”

Rhian Lilley, development manager at Erewash School Sport Partnership, said: “These Mini Games events are one of the highlights of our year. They give lots of primary pupils the opportunity to try different sports and they also get to mix with pupils from other schools. They have a great time and hopefully go back to school with a renewed enthusiasm for sport and PE.”
