Maggie Throup MP, Member of Parliament for Erewash, has given her verdict on the long awaited Chilcot Report into the Iraq War, following its release on Wednesday 6th July.

Speaking about the findings of the report Maggie said:

“The Iraq War was a defining moment in our country’s recent history and one which will continue to have serious consequences for many years to come.

“It is clear that there was a number of failings at each stage, prior, during and following the invasion in 2003, and it will now be up to Parliament to draw its own conclusion from the report during a two day debate to be held next week.

“Whilst we cannot turn back the clock, it is imperative that we learn the lessons of the past and that is why steps have already be taken to improve the decision-making process including the establishment of the National Security Council (NSC) and the appointment of a National Security Adviser.

“The decision to authorise military intervention is undoubtedly one of the hardest decisions that we, as elected Members of Parliament take. I believe that Britain must not and should not shy away from its role on the world stage or fail to protect its people.

“Most importantly we must remember the families of those who have lost loved ones to this conflict and must do everything possible to support those who continue to live with the scars of this war, both physically and mentally.

“As a nation we must never forget the incredible sacrifice of the sons, daughters, husbands, wives, fathers and mothers who have given their lives in the service of our country.”
