Local MP Maggie Throup provided some light hearted relief to the first Prime Ministers Questions since the EU Referendum, as she took the opportunity to announce the winner of her Queen’s Birthday Card Competition.

The winning design, entered by children from the Rocking Horse Nursery, Ilkeston, will now be presented to Her Majesty by the Prime Minster at his weekly audience with her at Buckingham Palace.

“I am delighted to announce that the Rocking Horse Nursery have won my Design a Birthday Card for the Queen Competition.

“Our children are the future of this country and I believe it is extremely important to engage them in the political process at an early age. Running competitions like this gives me the opportunity to speak to more children about my role of as their Member of Parliament and how the decisions that are taken in Westminster affect the country and world in which they live.

“Britain’s historic decision to leave the EU has, quite rightly, dominated the political agenda and so it was good to be able to lighten the mood during an otherwise tense time in Parliament.”
