Erewash Borough Council is warning people to be on their guard against fake emails and text messages that offer council tax and income tax rebates and request personal information.

The council has issued an immediate alert after a resident in the borough got in touch to say they had received messages from a company posing as a government-run organisation.

The message falsely claims the resident is eligible for a council tax refund and asks them to complete a tax refund form, which includes a request for confidential banking information.

Councillor Chris Corbett, Leader of Erewash Borough Council, says:

“We are urging residents to be aware of these email and text scams, which have been highlighted nationally as fake over recent months.

“We would never contact a Council Tax payer in this way and we advise anyone receiving these emails and text messages to delete them. We remind residents that they should never, in any circumstances, give out personal or banking details by email or to anyone making an unsolicited call or visit to their home.”

Any residents with concerns over any document they receive by email, text or through the post relating to Council Tax can call Erewash Borough Council’s revenues team on 0115 907 1000.
