Donna is a double award winner in Derbyshire NHS honours!
Derbyshire healthcare assistant Donna Falvey is a double award winner in the 2019 Extra Mile Awards to honour exceptional staff at Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust.
Donna, based at Long Eaton Health Centre, was named as healthcare hero and rising star 2019 at the awards ceremony hosted at Derby’s Roundhouse on Friday 18 October.
Donna, who lives in Ilkeston, was nominated for her exceptional care and compassion for her patients even though she has faced health challenges of her own recently.
Donna is pictured receiving her healthcare hero award from Michelle Bateman, chief nurse, and her rising star award from Bernard Thorpe, lead governor and Prem Singh, chairman, at Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust. She said she was “astonished to win two awards and so proud to work for Derbyshire Community Health Services.”
NHS nursing colleague Hazel Julian, who nominated Donna for both awards, said: “Donna is caring, compassionate, and respectful and always makes a positive difference to her team, her patients and their families.
“Donna underwent major surgery a year ago but continues always to go the extra mile for all. This includes altering a patient’s stitching to his slippers to enable them to fit so he could attend the hospice day care for ongoing support. Donna has taken a lady’s trousers up to prevent her from falling.
“Donna recently provided outstanding care and compassion to a lady at the end of her life who had experienced multiple hospital admissions and wished to be supported at home. She also provided outstanding psychological support to her husband, arranging day centres for him so he did not become socially isolated after his wife passed away.
“Donna consistently develops outstanding rapport with patients, relatives and carers. This rapport enables a high standard of physical and psychological care to patients and relatives.
“We are a small team and very busy but Donna always makes time to ensure we are supported as nurses during her own busy day. She is an asset to our team and to the organisation.”
Prem Singh, chairman of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, said: “These awards are one of the most important events in our calendar, where we publicly demonstrate the value and importance of recognising all the fantastic work that goes on each day for patients. It is a chance for us to honour, thank and celebrate our amazing staff.”
The Extra Mile Awards, now in their sixth year, are open to the 4,300 staff of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust. There were more than 400 nominations and 60 finalists for the 2019 awards. These are individuals and teams who have been nominated by others for their dedication and caring.
