The last Pioneer.
This much loved paper appeared for the last time on Thursday 23rd March, 1967. The announcement explained: "For several years the costs of producing the newspaper have been rising steadily without a corresponding increase in revenue. In recent months the position has been made more acute and there are no grounds for anticipating any considerable additional revenue in the future."
The Pioneer was enjoyed by many local people and provided good competition for the Advertiser. Needless to say when the Pioneer disappeared the Advertiser didn't need to try so hard, so from having two good weekly newspapers we had one not-so-good one.
