Purl-er of an idea!
Knitting fans in Erewash are being asked to get involved in a heart-warming project to raise money for the Mayor of Erewash’s chosen charities.
Called Knit a Nipper, residents can knit tiny brooches of children which will then be sold at various outlets to raise money for Derbyshire Action for Children and the Rainbows Children’s Hospice – the two charities being supported by the Mayor, Councillor Sue Beardsley.
Councillor Beardsley is working with Rachael Spence, of Ilkeston’s Friends of Victoria Park group, on the fundraising project.
Keen knitters across the borough have already eagerly got involved in the charity drive, with a whole range of colourful and cute little nippers already produced and sold – while the ‘crafty’ supporters are still clicking their needles to produce as many fun characters for the brooches as possible.
Councillor Sue Beardsley, the Mayor of Erewash, says:
“I want to send out my personal thanks to all those knitters already getting behind this fabulous fundraising project to raise money for two important children’s charities. It’s been widely dubbed a ‘purl-er of an idea’ and I hope, as more people get to hear about it, that they will knit their own cute ‘nipper’ creations.
“The knitted nipper brooches will be available to buy in early September, so we hope residents will also show their support by buying one of these carefully crafted brooches to wear with pride.”
Residents wanting to get involved should visit Facebook/knitanipper for more details and a knitting pattern for the brooches. The page also features photos of characters already created and regular updates about the project.
Drop-off points for completed nippers include Ilkeston Town Hall, Long Eaton Town Hall, Erewash Museum, The Factory Kitchen Cafe, Ilkeston, The Old Black Horse Pub, Mapperley, Co-op Funeralcare, Derby Road, Long Eaton and Uniformality, 21-23 Nottingham Road, Borrowash. A full list will be posted on the Facebook page next month.
A full list of venues where the nipper brooches will be available to buy will also be posted and will include Ilkeston and Long Eaton town halls, Ilkeston Hospital and Coco’s on South Street, Ilkeston.
