Work starts at new play area

Work to install new play equipment at the Barling Drive Lagoon in Shipley View, Ilkeston will start this month.

The new and innovative play equipment will offer disability access. The work is expected to take between four and six weeks to complete.

The play area is being funded by a £100,000 grant from FCC Communities Foundation (formally WREN) which was made possible with support from Ilkeston Parents for Play, Erewash Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council.

The grant meant there was very little financial cost to the council and officers worked with local residents and members of Ilkeston Parents for Play to discuss designs for the new play area.

Consideration has also been given to the look of the park with a row of trees being planted along the edge of the site, with more due to be added in the autumn.

Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, said:

“This is great news for the highly anticipated renovation of the Barling Drive Lagoon play area. Thanks to the considerable grant being awarded, it will certainly make a huge difference to families in the Shipley View community who will benefit from having a safe, up-to-date and bigger play area.”
