A refurbishment project to upgrade the greenhouses at the West Park nursery complex in Long Eaton is close to completion.

The £110,000 project to upgrade the four glass houses started in September and saw the demolition of three greenhouses that were no longer fit for purpose. These have been replaced with modern aluminium structures which will contain more up-to-date heating, lighting and ventilation systems. A fourth is being refurbished.

The finishing touches are now being put in place, including heating pipes, plant benches, the installation of footpaths and a water system. The new nursery complex is due to open in March when plant production begins.

Thousands of plants are grown at West Park Nursery by the council’s park teams every year for displays across the borough, including the flowers that formed the popular Union Flag displays which could be seen in Ilkeston and Long Eaton in the summer of 2018.

Councillor Mike Wallis, Lead Member for Culture and Leisure at Erewash Borough Council, says:

         “The greenhouses are essential as this is where the colourful plants and flowers are grown that brighten up the borough. The upgrade project has been a great success so far and is on track to be completed next month. These new glass houses will save us money on maintenance and heating costs. We would like to again thank residents for their understanding while the work is completed.”
