The public meeting regarding Ilkeston having a homeless shelter this winter brought encouragement to backers Des Ball, Revd Christine French and Tracy Cunningham.
Over 50 people turned up to give their support to the project. They heard talks from representatives of Derby City Mission and The Canaan Trust who are experienced in running similar operations.
It is planned to run the shelter (at St John’s church hall) from Christmas day until 14th February 2019 (due to funding). Around twelve homeless people (male and female) can be accommodated. They will be given a supper, a bed for the night and breakfast.
Questions were asked by the public, including: What effect will the shelter have on people living nearby? And what about drugs and mental health issues?.
Many volunteers as well as donations are needed. You can find out if you could help on the Ilkeston Winter Shelter Facebook page.
