Conservative Press Release:
Maggie secures Ministerial Meeting to discuss Hazelwood closure

Erewash MP Maggie Throup has secured a meeting with the Minister responsible for Social Care, to discuss the proposed closure of Hazelwood care home in Cotmanhay.

The Minister’s intervention followed a passionate contribution by Maggie to a Commons debate on Social Care, in which she talked about her personal experience of looking after a parent who is in a care home.

Responding to the debate, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Local Government, Marcus Jones MP said:

“My hon. Friend the Member for Erewash (Maggie Throup) was right to point out that this is a long-standing issue that many Governments over decades have ducked. She mentioned the situation in Derbyshire with her council, which seems to have been left a difficult legacy by its Labour predecessor. I am certainly willing to meet her to discuss that issue.”

Maggie added:

“It is clear that Hazelwood provided a vital service within our community, with many residents relying on it to support relatives who are no longer able to be cared for in their own homes.

“Over the previous four years, Labour shamefully underfunded Hazelwood, meaning that now the new County Council administration must consider closing the home altogether, because of the significant repairs required to make it safe and warm.

“I wanted to bring this to the Minister’s attention, and hope that we can agree a support plan for the County Council, to ensure that Erewash residents can continue to access quality social care services locally.”
