Fairgrounds of the past
Erewash Museum is stepping back in time with a one-day ‘Fairgrounds of the Past’ exhibition on Saturday 21 October.
Fairground enthusiasts and visitors to the museum will have the opportunity to see and hear an original street organ and showman’s engine in the museum grounds and the Fairground Association of Great Britain will be displaying their fairground models in the Hayloft.
The event runs alongside the final day of the 765th Ilkeston Charter Fair and gives a taste of how fairs used to be in the past. It is free admission and the can be viewed between 11am and 4pm.
Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, said:
“This event is always popular with families and enthusiasts and is a great way to discover more about the history of fairgrounds and gain a real sense of the past, so go along and take a step back in time.”

Erewash Museum is a free museum located on the High Street, Ilkeston. It won the prize of Derbyshire Museum of the Year in 2011,2012 and 2016 and won the overall Excellence Award at the first ever East Midlands Heritage Awards in June 2013.
